Apple is reportedly testing a new design for the camera bump on the iPhone 16, which could resemble the vertical pill-shaped layout of the iPhone X.
The rumored change is said to be motivated by Apple’s plans to introduce spatial video recording to the base model iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which would allow users to capture immersive 3D videos that can be played back on the Apple Vision Pro headset.
The current iPhone 15 models have a diagonal camera arrangement with a square bump, which does not support spatial video. The iPhone 15 Pro models, on the other hand, have a larger square bump with three cameras and a LiDAR scanner, which enable spatial video recording.
The vertical camera layout was last seen on the iPhone 12 models in 2020, but they had a wider bump that also housed the flash and microphone. The new design would have a slimmer bump with two separate camera rings for the wide and ultra-wide cameras, and the flash would be placed on the side of the bump.
A separate rendering from Apple Hub gives us a look at a few more color options alongside a comparison to the iPhone 16 Pro, which is expected to offer the same basic design as the iPhone 15 Pro. Based on rumors, the whole reasoning behind the redesigned camera location on the iPhone 16 is so that the device can record spatial video which can then be played back on the Apple Vision Pro.
Apart from the camera bump, the iPhone 16 models are also expected to feature some minor changes to the Action Button and Capture Button, as well as the usual hardware upgrades such as the Apple A18 chipset, 8GB RAM, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.
Apple typically unveils its new iPhone models in September, so we still have several months to go before we see the final design of the iPhone 16. As always, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, as Apple may change its plans or have different prototypes in the works.
