April 7th marks a significant milestone – the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) founding in 1948. This annual celebration aims to raise awareness about a specific health topic of global concern. However, as we commemorate this occasion, the right to health for millions worldwide is increasingly under threat.

Diseases and disasters loom large, claiming countless lives and causing widespread disability. Conflicts ravage communities, leaving a trail of death, pain, hunger, and psychological distress in their wake. Simultaneously, the burning of fossil fuels not only fuels the climate crisis but also robs us of our fundamental right to breathe clean air, with indoor and outdoor air pollution claiming a life every five seconds.

The WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All has revealed a sobering reality: while at least 140 countries enshrine health as a human right in their constitutions, many nations fail to enact and enforce laws ensuring their populations have access to essential health services. This reality underscores the startling fact that in 2021, more than half of the world’s population – at least 4.5 billion people – lacked full coverage for essential health services.

To address these pressing challenges, the theme for World Health Day 2024 is “My health, my right.” This year’s theme champions the right of every individual, regardless of their location, to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

The World Health Day 2024 campaign serves as a rallying cry, reminding us that health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. It urges governments, organizations, and individuals to take action and ensure that everyone, everywhere, can exercise their right to a healthy life. This right should be non-negotiable and universally accessible.
