LP Crisis: Abure Used Party's Name To Raise Campaign Funds In US - Suspended Treasurer

The Labour Party’s Nasarawa State chapter has expressed its firm backing for Julius Abure, the embattled National Chairman of the party, amidst the ongoing disagreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The state party Chairman, Alexander Ombugu, asserted that Abure is facing opposition due to his transparency as a leader.

Naija News reports that Ombugu conveyed this message during an interview with journalists in Lafia, the state capital.

Ombugu emphasized that the party’s leaders and members in Nasarawa State stand by Abure’s leadership with unwavering loyalty and dedication.

He elaborated that Abure is encountering difficulties due to his transparent leadership approach, which some individuals find discomforting and strive to remove him from his position.

“It is disheartening that the NLC is not aligning with the National Chairman despite his efforts to bring the party to prominence and the numerous achievements he has recorded since his election.

“On this issue happening at the national level of our dear party, what I will say is that all of us in the Nasarawa State Labour Party are solidly behind our National Chairman, Julius Abure.

“Some people are only fighting him because the man is too good. They are fighting him because he is a transparent leader. We love him and we will continue to stand by him.

“However, I am surprised that the NLC are having some issues with him. It should not be so because Abure has achieved a lot for the Labour Party.

“They should rather see how to support him to take the party to greater heights, instead of the disagreements which are capable of taking the party backwards,” Ombugu stated.

Ombugu emphasized the party’s endorsement of the recent Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas, stating that this move would strengthen democracy at the grassroots and enable local leaders to make decisions that benefit rural residents.

He called on the federal government to guarantee that INEC oversees Local Government elections to improve the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.

Ombugu voiced scepticism towards the State Independent Electoral Commission’s ability to conduct unbiased LG elections, pointing out instances of manipulation in favour of those with the most resources.

“If INEC will start conducting Local Government elections, it is definitely going to be better than what we are having now.

At the moment, even people who did not campaign for electoral positions are announced as winners of elections they did not participate in. So, we are appealing that INEC should take over our chairmanship and councilorship elections. This will enable the electorates to choose their leaders by themselves,” Ombugu added.

Ombugu declared that the LP welcomes new and transitioning members from other political parties in the state.

He urged all current members from the 13 LGAs to stay dedicated to seizing power at both state and federal levels in 2027.
