In an interview that The Sun monitored, Dan Nwanyanwu, the former Labour Party (LP) chairman, discussed a number of topics, including the difficulties in Rivers State.
Quoting him, “First of all, let me correct some things: we don’t have two factions of the House of Assembly in Rivers State. There is only one legitimate state House of Assembly in Rivers State.”
“Secondly, yes, I’m not from Rivers State, but I have the right to speak on issues in that state. Now, let me tell you the reason why we’re interested. We want elections to be conducted in 27 local governments.”
Nwanyanwu said that since he currently belongs to the Zenith Labor Party, he should not be referred to as a former member. He claimed to have spent ten years in the Labor Party. He emphasized that their goal is to run for office and unseat some of Rivers’ seats, which is why they are concerned.
He made it clear that this is the reason behind their claims that the legislators have lost their standing in the legislature and that nothing will ever change unless there is a new election.
He pointed out that section 109 1(G) of the statute, which specifies what constitutes a member of the State House of Assembly losing their position, makes this quite plain.
He emphasized that you will forfeit your seat if you drive away from the party whose car you entered the state assembly in favor of another.
Nwanyanwu claimed that the governor would also agree with him that the judicial procedures are just diversions and that this means nothing.
