Arsenal and Brighton made an impressive start to their 2024-2025 Premier League campaigns with exciting wins earlier today, August 17.
Arsenal began their season with a convincing victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners dominated the game, with Kai Havertz opening the scoring with a header from Bukayo Saka’s cross.
The Nigerian-born England forward then added a second goal with a powerful left-footed shot after a quickly taken free-kick.
Despite not being at their best, Arsenal controlled the game and deservedly secured a 2-0 win.
Wolves debutant Jorgen Strand Larsen had a header saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, and substitute Matheus Cunha missed a clear chance to equalize. However, Wolves failed to create many clear-cut opportunities, and manager Gary O’Neil couldn’t argue with the outcome.
Meanwhile, Brighton’s youngest-ever permanent manager, Fabian Hurzeler, led his side to a remarkable victory over Everton at Goodison Park.
The match marked the beginning of Everton’s final season at the historic venue before relegating to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. Despite the sentimental occasion for Everton, Brighton showed no mercy, securing a win for their young manager.
The game saw tackles flying in from both teams, with Jack Harrison’s early goal for Everton ruled out for offside and Joao Pedro hitting the post with a powerful shot.
Brighton took the lead through Kaoru Mitoma’s finish after Yankuba Minteh’s fine work. Everton had a penalty decision overturned after a VAR review and then suffered further when Danny Welbeck and Simon Adingra added two more goals to seal the 3-0 win for Brighton.
The game was marred by Ashley Young’s red card for Everton as the home side endured a thoroughly disappointing opening defeat.
In the other two games played simultaneously with the aforementioned games, Newcastle United grabbed a 1-0 win over Southampton, while Nottingham Forest managed to seal a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in front of their home fans.
