Mikel Obi, former captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has stated that he was offered performance-enhancing drugs while at Chelsea.

The news comes after the Football Association temporarily suspended Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk for failing a drugs test this week. In response, the Ukrainian winger professed his innocence, saying he had “not done anything wrong.”

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed his hope that Mudryk is innocent, noting that he would always question what was being offered to him. “For him (Mudryk) and his family, I hope he is innocent. I remember when we were playing, if someone was offering me something, I would ask you what it was,” Mikel shared.

He went on to emphasize personal responsibility regarding what athletes consume, saying, “I’m responsible for what I put in my body, what I eat, and stuff like that. People around you—friends, friends of friends—might tell you that this will give you an edge in performance, but I would ask, ‘What is this? Is this legal?’ I would tell them to go away; I don’t want to talk about it.”

Mikel concluded by stating that Mudryk remains innocent until proven guilty.
