Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has announced immediate monthly subscription price increases for new customers in Nigeria and existing users starting January 27, 2025.

In an email sent to subscribers, the company explained that the price adjustments are necessary to improve network infrastructure and ensure the continued delivery of high-quality internet service nationwide.

The new pricing includes: Standard (Residential) N75,000, Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited) N167,000, and Mobile – Global (Global Roam) N717,000.

“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to support and improve your experience with Starlink,” the company said.

Starlink also informed subscribers that they have the option to cancel their service at any time if they no longer wish to continue with the new pricing.

In September, the company attempted a price hike that saw a 97 per cent increase, from N38,000 to N75,000 monthly. At the time, the company cited inflation as the reason for the adjustment.

However, the Nigerian Communications Commission initially announced that it would sanction Starlink for this unauthorized increase, only to later retract the statement, leading to confusion over regulatory approval.

Amid the backlash, Starlink temporarily suspended the price hike and promised credits to affected customers while navigating these regulatory challenges.

Starlink launched its operations in Nigeria in December 2022, becoming the first African country to receive the satellite-based internet service. While it has been praised for providing internet access to remote and underserved areas, the company has faced criticism for its pricing model, which some argue is beyond the reach of the average Nigerian.

The price increase comes at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with economic challenges, raising questions about the accessibility and affordability of Starlink’s service for the wider population.
