The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.

The decision, approved by the NFF Executive Committee on January 7, 2025, followed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting held in Abuja earlier in the month.

Chelle, 47, is a seasoned coach with a rich history in football management, having previously led Mali’s national team from 2022 to 2024.

He also managed clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran, and enjoyed a successful playing career in France, representing clubs including Martigues, Valenciennes, and Lens.

Born in Côte d’Ivoire to a French father and Malian mother, Chelle was eligible to represent three countries at the international level.

He chose Mali, earning five caps during his career. As Mali’s head coach, Chelle led the Aiglons to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they narrowly lost to the eventual champions.

Under his tenure, Mali achieved 14 wins, five draws, and three losses, cementing his reputation as a tactician.

Chelle succeeds Finidi George, who resigned following Nigeria’s poor performances in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a disappointing draw against South Africa and a defeat to the Benin Republic.

The NFF expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to steer the Super Eagles back on track. His immediate task will be to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, with crucial Matchday 5 and 6 qualifiers scheduled for March.
