Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a shipment of Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, concealed in a duvet and prepared for export to the United Kingdom through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
This was disclosed by NDLEA’s Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a statement to Naija News on Sunday.
Two suspects, Adakole Sunday and Austin Balogun, were apprehended on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in connection with the consignment, which contained six parcels of the psychoactive substance weighing 3.5 kilograms.
During interrogation, Austin Balogun, the principal agent, admitted receiving ₦700,000 for the shipment, most of which he claimed was spent on export handling fees and securing an apartment.
Nationwide Arrests and Seizures
In Ikorodu, Lagos, NDLEA operatives raided a hideout at Igbo Olumo, arresting two suspects, Joseph Oluwasegun Adewale and Biodun Adelakun. Seized items included seven liters of skuchies, a psychoactive mix made with black currant, cannabis, and opioids, as well as firearms:
- Three locally made double-barrel rifles;
- One locally made double-barrel pistol;
- One English-made pistol;
- One locally made single-barrel rifle;
- Three cartridges;
- One empty 9mm cartridge;
- An iron-head axe.
Another operation in Mushin on Sunday, January 19, led to the seizure of 47 kilograms of skunk, a cannabis strain, and 25.46 kilograms of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, from the notorious Akala area.
In Ekiti State, NDLEA officers arrested 26-year-old Adepoju Taiwo on Thursday, January 23, with 1.95 kilograms of Canadian Loud along Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti.
Meanwhile, in Kwara State, Auwal Sani was apprehended in Bode Saadu, Moro Local Government Area, on Monday, January 20, with 50,000 pills of tramadol (225mg), weighing 36.56 kilograms.
In Kano, operatives arrested three suspects: Nigerien national Abubakar Lami, 45, along with Abba Sani, 35, and Auwal Aliyu, 32, at Gadar Tamburawa. Recovered items included 13.1 kilograms of skunk and 125 liters of suck and die, a psychoactive substance. Additionally, a cannabis plantation in Gefen Kasa, Dawakin Kudu, was destroyed, with a suspect, Sabo Ali Muhammad, 45, linked to the farm.
Advocacy Efforts and Commendation
The NDLEA also intensified its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign through sensitization lectures and advocacy visits to schools, workplaces, traditional palaces, and communities nationwide.
Highlights include engagements at Army Children Secondary School (Oyo), Government Day Secondary School (Kebbi), St. Dominic Comprehensive College (Akwa Ibom), and District Junior College (Agege, Lagos).
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the agency’s officers in Lagos, Kano, Kwara, and Ekiti for their successful operations. He also praised the advocacy teams for spreading awareness and reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking across the country.
