MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, has increased its data prices, prompting strong reactions from customers.

The company confirmed the price adjustments in a response shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by. We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount,” MTN stated.

This change follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a tariff increase for telecom operators, citing current market conditions.

Reuben Mouka, NCC spokesperson, announced the decision in January, explaining that it adheres to the commission’s regulatory authority under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

According to Mouka, the new regulation allows for a maximum tariff increase of 50 per cent, a reduction from the over 100 per cent hike initially requested by certain network operators.

“The adjustment, limited to a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs—though lower than the over 100 per cent proposed by some operators—was determined with consideration for ongoing industry reforms that will positively impact sustainability,” Mouka stated.

Despite this limit, analysis of MTN’s revised pricing structure reveals significant increases in data bundle costs, with some rising by over 200 per cent.

New MTN Data Prices:

15GB bundle – Previously N2,000, now N6,000

1.5TB plan – Previously N150,000, now N240,000

100GB bundle – Previously N20,000 for 100GB, now N25,000 for 90GB

600GB bundle – Previously N75,000, now N120,000 for 480GB
