Apple is reportedly planning to launch the next generation of its budget-friendly iPhone SE in 2025, and it will come with a major upgrade: an OLED screen. This would be the first time that the iPhone SE series, which has always used LCD panels, would adopt the OLED technology that is already present in the flagship iPhone models.
According to a report from The Elec, a Korean publication that covers the display industry, Apple is currently negotiating with three display suppliers for the OLED panels for the next iPhone SE: Samsung Display, BOE, and Tianma. Samsung Display is said to have offered the lowest price of $30 per panel, while BOE and Tianma have quoted $35 and $40, respectively.
The report claims that the OLED panels for the next iPhone SE will be similar to those used in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, which have a 6.1-inch screen size, an 1170×2532 resolution, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. However, the next iPhone SE is expected to have a single rear camera, unlike the dual-camera setup of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.
The next iPhone SE is rumored to launch in early 2025, following a three-year gap since the previous model, which was released in 2022. The iPhone SE series is aimed at customers who prefer a smaller and cheaper iPhone, or who want to switch from Android to iOS without breaking the bank. The current iPhone SE, which starts at $399, has a 4.7-inch LCD screen, a Touch ID home button, an A14 Bionic chip, and wireless charging support.
Apple has not confirmed any details about the next iPhone SE, but analysts and supply-chain sources have suggested that the company is working on the device and that it will feature an OLED screen. OLED screens offer better contrast, color accuracy, and viewing angles than LCD screens, as well as lower power consumption and thinner bezels. The next iPhone SE could also benefit from the Ceramic Shield glass that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 series, which offers four times better drop performance than previous models.
