Harry Amass will stay at Manchester United to continue his development this season, according to The Athletic.
Amass was one of the standout academy stars of United’s pre-season tour, starting all three games and impressing, particularly in the first two.
His performance against Liverpool was a mixed bag. Up against one of the world’s best right wingers in Mo Salah, Amass looked rattled and out of his depth at times and composed and confident at others.
After the game, manager Erik ten Hag compared the 17 year old to last season’s breakthrough star, Kobbie Mainoo, saying he “is not that far along now [as Mainoo was] at this moment… but if we train him well, if we coach him well, then in three months it’s possible that he can be at that point.”
At the point in the calendar when clubs are deciding whether to send youngsters out on loan or keep them at the club, Ten Hag’s words suggested that Amass would stay.
This has now been confirmed by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, who states that “Amass, the 17-year-old left-back, is expected to continue the season with United.”
Earlier in the summer it looked as though United were in the market for a left back, with the likes of Fenerbahce’s Ferdi Kadiolgu and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez getting regular mentions. However, over the last few weeks attention seems to have turned to right backs, with Bayern Munich’s Noussair Mazraoui looking set to join the club.
This opens up a big opportunity for Amass.
United’s first choice left back is Luke Shaw, with Tyrell Malacia his backup. However, Malacia has still not folly recovered from a season-long injury and Ten Hag has said that it will be two months before he is ready to play again.
This leaves the somewhat injury-prone Shaw as the only left back starting the season besides Amass.
Of course, if there are two fit senior right backs available, Ten Hag will likely switch one of those across in the event that Shaw is injured. Shifting Lisandro Martinez from centre back is also an option if there is cover there.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Amass is named in the first team squad for the Premier League and/or Europa League this season and it would not be a surprise to see him making his competitive debut in the very near future.
