Erik Ten Hag explains why he substituted Marcus Rashford against Porto

Manchester United’s manager, Erik Ten Hag has responded to those who criticised him for substituting Marcus Rashford at halftime during the game against Porto in the Europa League.

The Red Devils failed to secure their first win of the season in the Europa League after their first game of the competition ended in a draw against FC Twente. Erik Ten Hag was asked during his post-match press conference why he took out Marcus Rashford at half-time and replaced him with Alejandro Garnacho.

According to him, there was no specific reason in mind aside from deciding what was best for the team and also squad rotation.

“Garnacho was my best player on Sunday by far. Over the left side we didn’t defend well and Marcus also plays a part in this. But it was about Garnacho and nothing against Rashy.”

He also added,

“He had a great game, not only on Sunday, but I think in the whole season. And so we shook them. On Sunday, we have again another hard game, good game. So we need players to be available and be fit and fresh.”

Manchester United’s next game is in the Premier League against Aston Villa at the Villa Park on Sunday, October 6, 2024, as they look to move up on the league table.
