A former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has expressed admiration for Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, who was recently killed by Israeli soldiers.

Ahmad took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Sinwar, stating he was “born, lived, and died a leader.”

Sinwar, who was designated a terrorist by the European Union, was a key figure in the October 7 attacks on Israel, which resulted in over 1,000 fatalities. In January 2024, the EU issued a warrant for his arrest, labelling him a terrorist.

The announcement of Sinwar’s death came on Thursday, confirming that Israeli forces had eliminated him in southern Gaza during a military operation, marking a significant moment in the ongoing conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to Sinwar’s assassination as a “heavy blow” to Hamas, noting it as an important milestone in the group’s downfall, although he cautioned that the conflict is not over.

Sinwar had assumed leadership of Hamas in August, following the assassination of former leader Ismail Haniyeh during a confrontation between Israeli soldiers and Hamas forces.

US President Joe Biden, backing Israel, called the day a significant victory for Israel and a potential opportunity for a political settlement in Gaza.
