Marco Angulo, a 22-year-old international footballer, has sadly passed away following a devastating car crash in Ecuador. The incident happened in Quito, the country’s capital, on October 7.
A Devastating Collision
The crash occurred on the Rumiñahui highway at 4:30 a.m., involving a Ford Explorer registered to Angulo’s sister. He was traveling with four others when the vehicle collided with a 50-ton metal structure. The impact was so powerful, it moved the structure five meters. Tragically, two other lives were also lost in the crash—Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a rising star with Independiente Juniors, and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Diogo Nazareno of Cuniburo Fútbol Club.
A Fight for Survival
Rushed to the hospital, Angulo underwent a delicate operation—a decompressive craniectomy. Surgeons removed 300 cubic centimeters of blood to ease the pressure in his head caused by the trauma. He also sustained a lung contusion requiring a chest tube, though no active bleeding was present.
But the injuries were too severe. After 35 days in the hospital, Angulo succumbed to his wounds on November 11.
A Star Gone Too Soon 🌟
Angulo’s football journey was brief but impactful. He played for Ecuadorian club LDU Quito on loan from FC Cincinnati, an MLS team. In just three years, he rose to prominence, earning two caps for Ecuador’s national team. His last match was a victory—a 2-1 win over Australia in March 2023.
His club, teammates, and fans are mourning the loss. LDU Quito shared, “His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.” Club captain Ezequiel Piovi added, “May you rest in peace.”
A Somber Reflection
Angulo’s passing is a stark reminder of life’s fragility. His talent, energy, and spirit left a legacy, even in his short time on the pitch. Rest in peace, Marco Angulo.
