Legendary forward Len Shackleton made the move from Newcastle United to rivals Sunderland on this day back in 1948, signing for £20,050. The deal was a record transfer fee at the time.

Shackleton had started his career at Bradford Park Avenue before joining Newcastle in 1946. After scoring six goals on his debut for The Magpies, Shackleton scored 22 goals in 38 games.
He left Newcastle to join Sunderland after falling out with members of the club and handing in a transfer request.

By the end of the 1947/48 season, Shackleton scored four goals in 14 appearances. He would stay at Roker Park until 1958, scoring a further 96 goals in 334 games.
