Burnley issue statement addressing "completely unacceptable" tragedy chanting at Old Trafford

Burnley have issued a statement addressing alleged incidents of tragedy chanting that took place during the 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Saturday.

United took the lead at Old Trafford in the 79th minute through Antony, who capitalised on a defensive error from the Clarets to guide the ball into the back of the net.

However, a momentary defensive lapse between Casemiro and Andre Onana saw Vincent Kompnay’s men handed a late penalty, which Zeki Amdouni easily dispatched to ensure the spoils were shared between the two sides.

The result left United in sixth position in the Premier League and just a point above Newcastle with four top-flight games left before the campaign elapses.

After the final whistle, Burnley released a statement condemning alleged tragedy gesturing and chanting from the away end.

This came after offensive footage was posted online. In their statement, Burnley promised to work with the authorities to identify those responsible so that action is taken against them.

The Lancashire club’s statement read, “We are aware of offensive footage currently circulating on social media from the away end of today’s fixture at Old Trafford.”

“Tragedy related gesturing and chanting is completely unacceptable, and Burnley Football Club take a zero-tolerance approach.”

“We will continue to work with Greater Manchester Police, Lancashire Police and Manchester United to help identify and prosecute the individuals responsible.”

Amidst all this, The Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan has reported that an arrest has already been made.

It’s understood that 44-year-old Nathan Rawlinson was held in the away end at Old Trafford as the game progressed. The mentioned individual has been charged under the Public Order Act and bailed.

Erik ten Hag and his players return to action next Monday when they take an Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
