Environmental Services Assistant Director Cynthia Ruiz says singing is her passion. Her talent reached a new audience in early October when she sang at the Providence Saint John’s Health Center’s Spanish Heritage Month talent show. Cynthia sang three songs – including requests for two encores from a large crowd of onlookers.
Wearing a black dress and a red head dress, Cynthia’s featured song was “Como La Flor” – which means “Like the Flower” in English. “The songs I chose were a tribute to Selena. I have admired her since I was young and loved that crossover between Spanish and English.” Cynthia’s heritage includes family members from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.
As the Assistant EVS Director at the hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., Cynthia is well known among the St. John’s staff. She has been the Assistant EVS Director there for three years. She also served in that position at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles for one and one-half years before moving to St. John’s.
Cynthia credits Unit Director Arturo Razo for encouraging her to sing at the event. “I’ve known Art for about nine years, and he’s heard me singing in my office and at Crothall events at Good Samaritan. I credit him for recommending me. He pushed me, and it worked out well.”
During their time at Good Samaritan, Razo promoted Cynthia twice, to manager and assistant director.
“Cynthia is fluent in English and Spanish, and her ability to be so inclusive is one reason she is embraced at diversity celebrations and throughout the hospital. I’ve been fortunate to work for someone who cares about our patients and our employees.”
