Former United star says “special connection” could seal the deal for one of Europe’s most lethal strikers

Former United star says "special connection" could seal the deal for one of Europe's most lethal strikers

Manchester United’s appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach has already set the transfer rumour mill into overdrive with conversations starting on which Sporting stars might be following their manager to Old Trafford.

Star striker Viktor Gyökeres is one of the names United fans are getting excited by, with the Swedish goal machine continuing his fine form in Portugal.

Former United centre-forward Dimitar Berbatov has given his view on the potential transfer, saying he feels there’s a good chance we see Gyökeres swapping Lisbon for Manchester in the future.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Berbatov praised the 26-year-old and says his current relationship with Amorim will be key to the move.

“This guy, Viktor Gyökeres is scoring goals for fun right now, so I think there is a special connection with him and the coach.

So maybe, we are probably going to see him in a United shirt at one point,” said Berbatov.

Asked if it would be something he would like to see, the Bulgarian was in no doubt of United’s need to improve in attacking areas and feels Gyökeres would improve the current options.

“From what he’s showing right now, I think yes, because our strikers at the moment are not doing and producing, like we see from the wheel wagon (Sky stats graphic), 18th in the league for scoring goals is embarrassing for a stature of club like United,” he added.

United’s lack of goals has been an issue for the last couple of campaigns and this year’s profligacy was a big factor in Erik ten Hag losing his job at the Theatre of Dreams.

With just nine Premier League goals registered in twelve games, Amorim will be well aware of the need to improve those metrics quickly when he touches down in Manchester.

The new manager has promised Sporting he will not be going in for any of their players in January but should he struggle find the formula with the current crop before the end of the season, the Portuguese club might be expecting a call in the summer.

Amorim’s first game in charge will come against newly promoted Ipswich Town on November 24th.
