How Will Humanoid Robots Impact the Economy?
An analysis of humanoid robotics explores their potential impact on industries like manufacturing. Humanoid robots could transform the economy, to the beat of ~$24 trillion, split between household and manufacturing robotics.
In the U.S. manufacturing sector, where nearly 12 million people work, the research suggests that 5.9 million humanoid robots could replace human workers, cutting payroll costs by half while maintaining $2.4 trillion in output. The tipping point for widespread adoption is when humanoid robots become more cost-effective, at $16,000, delivering just a 5% productivity gain over human labor. As of today, humanoid prices vary widely, starting at $5,000 for basic models and soaring to over $500,000 for the most advanced ones, while maintenance and upgrades can range from $1,000 to $10,000 annually.
Large manufacturing firms, which benefit more from automation, already enjoy higher productivity and lower labor costs than small firms. Small manufacturers, burdened with higher labor costs, could disproportionately benefit from generalizable humanoid robots. These robots may provide a significant boost, especially as companies face labor shortages and onshoring trends post-COVID, potentially pushing the robotics market into trillions.

Are Microsoft Copilot+ PCs Worth the Hype?
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs, launched in May 2024, are AI-focused laptops with advanced specs like 40 TOPS processing power, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage. They feature AI tools like automatic resolution adjustments, real-time translation, and enhanced video calls. Initially built on Qualcomm’s ARM-based chips, Intel and AMD versions are coming by late 2024.
While Copilot+ PCs offer excellent battery life and unique AI functions, they face app compatibility issues and poor graphics performance, making them less ideal for gaming or heavy-duty tasks. Future Intel and AMD models may improve compatibility but could reduce battery efficiency.
Building in Public #3
In partnership with OpenCV.
What did we build this week? This week, we developed a parking app that allows users to reserve and pay for a parking spot via a website. While the front end is currently simple and basic, the back end is fully functional, and we’re confident we can enhance the user interface as needed. Users can reserve their spot by entering their car plate number on this link. No payment is needed to test it, and when they arrive at the lot, a camera reads the plate to verify payment. If payment hasn’t been made, a message is displayed denying entry. If payment is made, they will be allowed to enter the lot.
The app was built using Python for the back end, HTML for the front end, and OpenCV libraries for the license plate recognition functionality. It’s hosted on a Digital Ocean droplet.
Currently, you can manually upload an image of the car plate number you entered to compare it against registered plates. In the future, this functionality will be integrated with a camera at the parking lot entrance for automatic detection.
For the above step, I entered a car plate number (i.e. 123ABC) on a text file and screenshot it to upload it as an image. If you want the code, i’ll be happy to send it to you or tweak it to fit your needs.
