Joy for United as Lisandro Martinez set to return from injury ahead of schedule - The Athletic

Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez is on the brink of completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

Despite being called up to the Argentina squad, the defender will not partake in the upcoming international friendlies.

Argentina, reigning world champions, are scheduled to play El Salvador and Costa Rica as they gear up for the Copa America this summer.

According to The Athletic, he is expected to return to action for United against Brentford.

Martinez will complete his recovery phase with the Argentina national team, sidelining him from participation in the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on March 17.

Erik ten Hag will be delighted with the news of  Martinez nearing a return to full fitness, especially considering the Argentine’s pivotal role in United’s defensive setup.

Martinez’s importance to United extends beyond his defensive capabilities; his adeptness at playing out from the back has become a cornerstone of United’s build-up play under Ten Hag.

His ability to initiate attacks from deep positions, coupled with his composure under pressure and precision in passing, makes him an invaluable asset in the Dutchman’s system.

This skill set not only enhances United’s fluidity in transitioning from defence to attack but also underscores Martinez’s crucial role in the team.

His return is a significant uplift to the team’s overall playstyle, embodying Ten Hag’s philosophy of maintaining control and dictating the pace of the game from the back.

In related news, United announced that Mason Mount has resumed training after a calf injury in November.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also back in training, readying for the team’s upcoming clash with Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final.
