Lutnick tried to calm down tensions with Canada – report

The Globe & Mail reports on an exchange between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Ontario Premier Doug Ford today. It came after Ontario threatened to cut off US electricity exports among other exports.

Lutnick told Ford to stand down, according to the report but the Premier “said no and that if anything, he’ll go harder.”

Two sources in the room described the call.

He told the premier that some comments from Canadian officials –
including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks that tariffs are “a
very dumb thing to do” – are viewed as personal attacks against the
president, the sources said.

Ford said he wouldn’t change gears and that he has done everything he can to fight fentanyl trafficking in Canada. He also told Lutnick he wants to work together, as does the Prime Minister.
