On This Day – 10th December

If you were one of the 20,106 Newcastle United and West Ham United fans that went to St James’ Park on this day in 1960, you’d have probably left utterly exhausted!

The First Division match ended in an astonishing 5-5 draw, with nine players getting on the scoresheet. Len White scored twice for Newcastle, with his team-mates Jackie Bell, John McGuigan and Bobby Mitchell also finding the back of the net. John Bond, John Dick, Dave Dunmore, Malcolm Musgrove scored for West Ham and Newcastle’s Alf McMichael also scored an own goal.

The 1960/61 season was one of many goals for The Magpies as they scored 86 league goals and conceded 109 goals, their worst defensive record in the club’s history. It is no surprise that they were relegated at the end of the season!
