On This Day – 24th January

Thierry Henry was dismissed by the Monaco board on this day back in 2019. The World Cup winner was given his marching orders after a dismal record, where his Monaco side could only muster four wins from the 20 games where Henry was at the helm.

Henry started his playing career at Monaco, where he made his debut in 1994. After five years at the club, Juventus signed him for £10.5 million before joining Arsenal in 1999.
After retiring from playing in 2012, the French striker had scored 366 career goals in 813 games and won 19 major honours.

Monaco was the first club that Henry tried to see if he could be as good a manager as he was a player. It was proved not to be the case as Monaco won four, drew five and lost 11 of the 20 games that he was in charge.

Since leaving Monaco, Henry has been in charge of Canadian side Montreal Impact, the French Under-21 team and the French team at the Paris Olympics last year.
