On This Day – 5th January

A tiny smattering of snow has fallen over areas of Great Britain over the last 24 hours, but it is nothing like The Big Freeze of 1963.

On this day back in 1963, only three of the scheduled 32 FA Cup Third Round ties took place. Sunderland won 4-1 away at Preston North End, Tranmere Rovers and Chelsea played out a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park and West Bromwich Albion won 5-1 away to Plymouth Argyle.

The final Third Round match was played on 11th March when Middlesbrough beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1, with that original tie finally taking place six days earlier at Ewood Park.

Incredibly, the Lincoln City vs Coventry City tie finally took place on the sixteenth attempt and fourteen of the 32 matches had ten or more postponements!

This makes the weather that we have had this weekend pale into insignificance!
