It’s official: Serie A will send five teams to the Champions League next season thanks to earning one of two additional spots available through UEFA’s new European Performance Spots.
Italy’s top flight officially clinched one of the two extra places yesterday evening after Roma and Atalanta progressed into the Europa League semi-finals while Fiorentina did the same in the Conference League. As a result, Serie A cannot mathematically finish worse than second thanks to their dominance this season in the UEFA Coefficient Ranking.
Despite no Italian clubs advancing to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Serie A’s fifth-placed finisher [currently Roma] will qualify for the competition next season.
