Tems' manager reveals untold story behind the Future & Drake collaboration

The songstress manager gave the detailed story behind the grammy-winning single ‘Wait for U’

Nigerian music executive Muyiwa Awoniyi, better known as Donawon, who manages Grammy-winning singer Tems, recently shared the inside story of how her collaboration with American superstars Drake and Future came to be.

The acclaimed Tems has been on a global rise since her breakout with Essence, achieving major milestones such as working with Rihanna, Beyoncé, and other top international artistes. During this incredible run, she secured a spot on Wait for U, a track with Drake and Future that earned her two Grammy nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, ultimately leading to her first Grammy win.

In a recent interview, Donawon recounted how the collaboration unfolded. According to him, while Tems and her team were on set with global company Coca-Cola, he received a message from a colleague urging him to check his email for something important. When he opened the email, he discovered a message from Epic Records—Future’s label—requesting clearance for Wait for U, which samples Tems’ track Higher as the song’s hook.

Interestingly, Donawon noted that Canadian rapper Drake was not initially on the track when Tems and her team cleared it, adding a surprising twist to the song’s development journey.
