New Law Requires Digital Stores to Clarify That You’re Licensing, Not Buying Content.
California’s new law (AB 2426), signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, requires digital storefronts to clearly inform customers that they’re only licensing digital content, like games, movies, and music, rather than owning it. Starting next year, stores will be banned from using terms like “buy” or “purchase” without disclosing the limitations and revocability of the license. This law responds to incidents where companies like Ubisoft and Sony removed digital content from users’ accounts, despite previous purchases. Violators could face fines for false advertising.
This transparency law should be adopted federally to protect consumers from misleading digital purchases, as the growing reliance on digital media calls for stronger consumer rights.

The Future of AI according to OpenAI’s CEO.
The CEO of OpenAI wrote about the marvels and advancements of AI but failed to mention the potential dangers of the technology. It reads like a great sales pitch, highlighting all the positives, and while these advancements are indeed impressive, they also come with significant risks. As technology progresses at such a rapid pace, humans may not be psychologically or genetically prepared to cope with its impact. This could lead to mental health issues and environmental concerns, particularly given AI’s immense energy demands.
It is true that in the coming decades, advances in AI will enable us to accomplish tasks that would seem like magic to past generations. The rapid acceleration of technology, particularly through deep learning, will enhance human capabilities, allowing us to solve complex problems and create personalized AI teams for education, healthcare, and more. While challenges remain, the Intelligence Age promises a future of unprecedented prosperity, with AI-driven breakthroughs in fields like climate change, space colonization, and scientific discovery. However, we must address risks like labor market disruption to maximize the benefits for society.

Building in Public #4
AI-Powered Flask App for Real-Time Image Processing.
In partnership with OpenCV.
What did we build this week? This week we built a web app, built with Flask and OpenCV which lets users capture images from their browser’s camera, process them on the server, and see real-time results.
- Live Camera Access: Users can capture an image from the live video stream by clicking a “Capture” button. This snapshot is then processed in the browser as a base64-encoded image and sent to the backend Flask server for processing.
- Image Processing: Captured images are sent to the server, where OpenCV applies filters or AI models. In this instance we can detect faces, but it can also detect weapons, pets, or basically anything that we train our model on. Check it out here and lets us know what you think.
- Real-Time Feedback: The processed image is sent back and displayed immediately.
This app demonstrates how AI and computer vision can be integrated into real-time web apps, showing the potential for interactive, scalable AI-powered tools across industries.
