The club is world famous for the Busby Babes of the 1950s and the class of 1992 under Sir Alex Ferguson, but United have actually been bringing through young players to the first team since long before even the Busby era.

United currently possess a record that has seen everyday matchday squad have at least one player from the youth team since the 30th of October 1937.

Despite the numerous negatives of last season, one huge positive was that the club maintained this tradition in style.

The Mail report that “featuring top of the list for most minutes by teenagers, Manchester United have shown their willingness to trust their youth and have instilled confidence in the young players.”

A total of 4,919 minutes were given to teenagers at United. The next side on the list were Brighton and Hove Albion with 4,606 minutes.

Rivals Manchester City only gave 807 minutes and Liverpool a paltry 137 minutes of action to the under 20’s.

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were the main reasons for the swell in minutes due to their immense seasons last year, culminating in a goal apiece in the FA Cup final victory.

Whilst Garnacho turned 20 on the 1st of July, Mainoo will remain a teenager until May 2025, so he will add plenty of minutes to next year’s total.

In spite of suffering a 3~month injury layoff, 18 year old new signing Leny Yoro is also expected to add numerous minutes to the overall total.

17 year old left back Harry Amass hugely impressed on the pre-season tour of the United States and it has been reported here that he will be part of Ten Hag’s squad next season.

The club hit the headlines once more recently when Arsenal’s highly-rated 16 year old strikerChido Obi-Martin left their academy to agree a deal to sign for United. The fact that Arsenal gave just 13 minutes to teenagers last season is likely to have been a big factor in his decision.

With the treble winning under 18 side and captures of talents such as Obi-Martin, there is surely an exciting future in store for United fans and the youth production line is well and truly in place for many years to come.
