Tottenham Hotspur is disputing the severity of Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game suspension for making a racist comment about teammate Son Heung-min. The club believes that the punishment handed down by the Football Association (FA) is too harsh.
Although Spurs accept the guilty verdict from the independent regulatory commission, they feel that the length of the ban is excessive. In addition to the suspension, Bentancur was fined £100,000 and required to participate in an educational program.
The incident in question occurred during a TV interview in Bentancur’s native Uruguay in June. When asked by the presenter for a Tottenham shirt, Bentancur responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same,” a comment that led to the FA charge in September.
Tottenham is adamant about their commitment to promoting respect and inclusion in football, and they are highlighting the steps that Bentancur will take as part of the disciplinary process.
