Trevor Whymark – An obituary

It was announced earlier today that former Ipswich Town striker Trevor Whymark has passed away at the age of 74.

Whymark spent ten years playing at Ipswich Town between 1969 and 1979. During his time at the club, Whymark scored four goals in a single game on three separate occasions, most notably in a home game against Lazio in the UEFA Cup.

Signing from non-league side Diss Town, Whymark scored an impressive 104 goals in 335 games for the Suffolk side and built up a formidable strike partnership with Paul Mariner, who joined from Plymouth Argyle in 1976.

A serious knee injury in 1977 caused Whymark to miss a lot of the season and he didn’t play in any of the games during the Portman Road club’s famous 1978 FA Cup run.

Derby County signed Whymark when he left Ipswich in 1979 but he only played twice for them. He joined Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps before going back to England to sign for Grimsby Town.
After four years with The Mariners, Whymark played for Southend United, Peterborough United and returned to his first club, Diss Town.

Whymark was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2019.
