United “not expected to” sign England international despite agreeing personal terms – Fabrizio Romano

United "not expected to" sign England international despite agreeing personal terms - Fabrizio Romano

Having already signed two centre-backs and one versatile full-back this summer, Manchester United are not expected to add to those departments any further.

United’s top-priority centre-back target was always Jarrad Branthwaite but saw both their bids get rejected by Everton, who were asking for a ludicrous amount.

That meant the Red Devils moved on to other targets and eventually signed Leny Yoro from Lille, a coup considering Real Madrid’s interest in the Frenchman, and Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

There have been murmurs that INEOS could go back in for the England international but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has quashed all those rumours and stated that Branthwaite will not be headed to Old Trafford this summer.

No more CBs this window

“I don’t think Manchester United will sign another centre back,” he told United Stand YT channel (via Caughtoffside).

It makes sense as the club already have Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire while Victor Lindelof’s injury means a summer exit has not materialised as yet.

Following Luke Shaw’s injury, the 20-time English league champions were also light on the left-side of their defence with Tyrell Malacia also expected to be out until October.

Following the summer splurge and with a midfielder to come, INEOS cannot afford to go gung-ho after a new left-back or else they risk breaching financial fair play rules.

The Peoples Person had relayed that the best the club could do is try and sign a free agent or agree a loan deal. There were links with Mario Hermoso, formerly of Atletico Madrid, and former Chelsea and Barcelona star Marcos Alonso.

Chilwell deal off

Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell was also a reported target but United simply cannot afford a permanent deal for the England international who the Blues will not loan out.

“Manchester United are not expected to do a deal for Ben Chilwell. Chelsea want a permanent sale but United aren’t expected to do that,” Romano confirmed.

Noussair Mazraoui can play on the left, as can Diogo Dalot and with Harry Amass impressing in pre-season, there is no need to splurge big on a new left-back.

There have reports linking the club with a big bid for Ferdi Kadıoğlu of Fenerbahce but that seems unlikely as of now.
