If you go back to the US tariffs at the start of February on Mexico and Canada, it was National Economic Council head Kevin Hassett who first hinted they would be delayed in a CNBC appearance at about the same time.
Yesterday, Lutnick also hinted at a timeline where cabinet would discuss tariffs yesterday and announce it today. Now, obviously, that changed as the tariffs went on today.
“He knows they’ve done a good job on the border, they haven’t done
enough on fentanyl, let’s see how the president weighs that today,” Sec.
Lutnick told CNN.
“He’s going to decide this afternoon and tomorrow we’re going to put out
those tariffs.”
One thing that Justin noted earlier is that Trump’s tariff announcement may have left room for tariff rates below 25%. Could Lutnick hint at that?
Few people know Trump’s current thinking as well as Lutnick so we will be watching this closely.
