World Sepsis Day 2024

Every year, September 13th marks world sepsis day, a global event aimed at raising awareness about sepsis, a life-threatening condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Sepsis occurs when the body response to an infection spirals out of control, leading to tissue damage, organ failure, and often death if not treated promptly. Despite being preventable and treatable, sepsis remains a leading cause of death worldwide, making awareness and education crucial.

What is sepsis?

sepsis happens when an infection, whether bacterial, viral, or fungal, triggers an extreme immune response. The body release   chemicals into the bloodstream to fight the infection, but these chemicals can cause widespread inflammation, leading to tissue damage and the failure of vital organs, such as the lung kidney and heart. sepsis can develop from common infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections or even minor skin cuts.

Symptoms of sepsis

sepsis can be difficult to recognize because its symptoms often resemble those of other illness. However, some key signs to watch for include:

  • fever, chills or a very low body temperature
  • Rapis heart rate or breathing
  • confusion, disorientation, or difficulty staying awake
  • severe pain and discomfort
  • sweaty skin

Who is at risk of sepsis?

Sepsis can arise in a patient with an infection, a serious injury, or a severe non-communicable condition; however, certain populations, like vulnerable individuals, are at higher risk.

  • Aged persons
  • Newly born or neonate
  • Hospitalized patients
  • Pregnant women
  • Patients with weak immune system
  • Presence of chronic medical conditions
  • Patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU)

World sepsis day is an opportunity to raise awareness about this deadly condition and advocate for improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. By understanding the risks, recognizing the signs, and seeking prompt medical care, we can help reduce the global burden of sepsis.
