Yuanyin “Sue” Shu is the fastest and most efficient housekeeper working at Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Colorado Springs. In an eight-hour shift, she cleans 26 occupied patient rooms, two rooms where patients have been discharged, as well as sleep rooms and other areas.
But her most valued trait is her passion for children. When entering a patient room, Sue tells the child she is their friend. And before she leaves, her goal is to make them smile. She once walked into a room where a toddler was crying loudly. Sue joined in, meeting the child’s pitch with a greeting and a smile. The youngster immediately stopped crying and was giggling by the time Sue departed.
As EVS System Patient Manager Angela Velez-Reyes states:
“Sue makes sure that every parent and child feels they are in a safe and clean environment. She understands the importance of a child being able to be a child and not someone who is a product of their diagnosis.”
She is also resilient, overcoming many obstacles while living on three continents. Born in China, Sue met her husband, Dale, who worked at the US Embassy in China. Following a transfer to the US Embassy in Poland, they decided to make their life in the US.
Once here, though reluctant to take the hospital job because of her limited language skills, she attended English-language classes and became fluent working around others. A mother of two, Sue has used her position to build meaningful relationships and a profession with purpose.
